Active Release Techniques® Treating TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)
Neck pain is something most of us deal with it and contains several origins from poor posture from sitting, or working on a computer for long periods. Even, weight lifting with poor form (for example, doing back-bar squats, dead-lifts, or even bench press) can cause neck pain. One of the conditions that can affect the neck is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). TOS can occur in 3 different locations and usually causes neurological symptoms down the arm into the hand. The nerve symptoms are not caused from a compressed disc in your neck, but rather compression of the nerve and artery bundle as it travels from the neck down the arm. The 3 locations include the muscles in the neck (anterior and middle scalenes), 1st rib and collarbone, and the pec muscle and the front of the shoulder blade. This will address how Active Release Techniques ® (ART) can treat TOS effectively. Because 97% of TOS cases are neurological in nature, ART ® and chiropractic care can effectively and efficiently treat the majority of these cases (if it arterial or vascular in nature, a consult to a vascular specialist is necessary).
An ART® chiropractor can identify TOS through a thorough exam, consultation, and history to determine the location, and nature of how this condition transpired. Upon completing physical exam, the ART® chiropractor will release the nerve from its compression. Breaking up the scar tissue with ART® will help to relieve the nerve symptoms and improve the function of your daily activities. Chiropractic manipulation and rehab/corrective exercises will promote better alignment and improve the speed by which the injury heals. A few ART® treatments will likely be needed to begin to see healing and improvement, but depending on how long one suffered will likely influence your recovery with ART®. Addressing your pain quickly will improve your outcome results and get back to doing what you love!
